Chiropractic Care for Autoimmune Disorders

September 10, 2025 By Megan Thompson

Living with an autoimmune disorder can feel like a constant balancing act. Symptoms like chronic pain, inflammation, and mobility challenges can make daily activities more difficult. While medical care from a rheumatologist or other specialists is essential, many patients find that adding chiropractic care to their treatment plan offers extra support, helping them move better, feel better, and manage their symptoms more effectively.

Before we explore chiropractic care for autoimmune disorders, let’s learn about the doctor that helped us write this article: our very own Dr. Zoe McTeer.

Dr. McTeer: Listening first, adjusting second.

Dr. McTeer’s first role out of chiropractic school was in an interdisciplinary clinic focused on patients with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.  She noticed these diagnoses were often delayed, and many patients had their concerns dismissed.  She quickly learned that offering compassion and understanding wasn’t optional—it was foundational.

What fascinated her most was how uniquely each patient presented.  No two cases were alike.  This variety sparked a deep curiosity and a commitment to support patients as individuals, not just as conditions.

Helping newly diagnosed patients navigate their journey became incredibly meaningful.  She aimed to quiet the noise and remind them that their care should revolve around them.  She also enjoyed teaching patients how to track symptoms and triggers, giving them greater insight and control over their health.

She’s proud to provide hands-on support that addressed pain without adding another prescription.  Sometimes, being heard and physically supported make all the difference.

That early experience continues to shape how she practices today: patient-centered, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that healing starts with listening.

We’re grateful to work in close proximity with a practitioner that is as dedicated as Dr. McTeer.

And now, let’s dive into it.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Patients with Autoimmune Disorders

Chiropractic care focuses on the health of your joints, muscles, and nervous system. For patients with autoimmune disorders, it can be a helpful complement to medical treatment by addressing pain, improving mobility, and supporting overall wellness.  Chiropractic care helps with:

Chronic Pain

Treating joints and muscles with chiropractic adjustments and targeted movement can help reduce the intensity of chronic pain. This is achieved through small reductions in pain pathway activity, which can make everyday activities feel more manageable.

Inflammation

Inflammation from autoimmune disorders can affect specific structures in the body as well as surrounding tissues. Chiropractic treatment of affected joints and muscles may:

  • Lower the volume of pro-inflammatory markers in the short term (Pro-inflammatory markers are little “flags” that your body waves when something is irritated)
  • Stimulate the autonomic nervous system, which is linked to reducing systemic inflammation and promoting tissue repair and recovery

Mobility

Gentle movement, stretching, and joint treatments can help increase both passive and active range of motion. They can also improve proprioception—your body’s ability to sense its position and movement. Better proprioception can help patients notice and communicate changes in their symptoms earlier, allowing for more proactive care.

Lifestyle Management

Chiropractors can also assist in monitoring and tracking lifestyle factors that may trigger symptom flare-ups, helping patients better understand and manage their individual patterns.

The Bottom Line

Autoimmune disorders are complex, and no single approach works for everyone. But for many patients, chiropractic care provides valuable relief and support alongside their medical treatments. By reducing pain, improving mobility, and supporting overall function, chiropractic care can help you take an active role in managing your health and quality of life.
