Cold Weather Pain: Why Pain Feels Worse in the Winter

January 7, 2026 By Megan Thompson

If you’ve ever noticed your joints feeling achier or your back tightening up as the temperature drops, you’re not imagining it.  Cold weather pain is a thing! Winter weather can affect everything from your circulation to your connective tissues– and those changes often make pain feel more intense.

For many people, the combination of cold temperatures, reduced movement, and holiday-season stress creates the perfect storm for their body (or more aptly put: the perfect WINTER storm).
This is especially true for chronic conditions like back pain, neck tension, arthritis, or old injuries that tend to “flare” in colder months.

Let’s take a closer look at why this happens, and how chiropractic care can help you stay comfortable, active, and aligned all winter long.

1. Cold Temperatures Tighten Muscles and Reduce Circulation

When the weather is cold, your body naturally conserves heat by pulling blood toward the core.  That means:

  • Less circulation to extremities

  • Muscles that feel tighter or more rigid

  • Reduced tissue elasticity

  • Increased stiffness, especially first thing in the morning

That familiar “winter stiffness” is your body working harder to stay warm.

Chiropractic adjustments help improve joint movement, enhance blood flow, and reduce tension — making it easier for your body to stay mobile despite the seasonal chill.

Yep, looks like a case of winter stiffness!

2. Joint Fluid Thickens in Lower Temperatures

The synovial fluid that cushions your joints behaves a lot like oil:
When it gets cold, it thickens.

This can make joints feel:

  • Achy

  • Creaky

  • Slow to warm up

  • More prone to discomfort during movement

This is especially noticeable in the spine, hips, knees, and shoulders.

Regular chiropractic care helps keep joints moving freely, which supports healthier lubrication and reduces that sticky, “rusty hinge” feeling.

Don’t fret, Mr. Tinman!  Chiropractic helps support your joints.

3. Winter Means Less Movement — and the Body Notices

Shorter days + cold weather = less exercise and more time indoors.
Less movement leads to:

  • Muscle tightness

  • Reduced flexibility

  • Increased spinal compression

  • Poorer posture (hello, couch season)

Even small dips in daily activity can make old injuries or chronic tension reappear.

Gentle chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and personalized stretching routines help counteract the effects of winter inactivity and keep the spine functioning optimally.

4. Posture Worsens in Cold Weather (and During the Holidays)

People naturally hunch forward in the cold (shoulders up, chin tucked) as the body attempts to preserve heat.
This “winter posture” can contribute to:

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder tension

  • Headaches

  • Low back pain

Combine that with long hours working from home, shoveling snow, or holiday travel, and it’s no surprise discomfort spikes.

Chiropractors help correct spinal alignment and teach posture-friendly habits so your body isn’t fighting gravity all season long.

We love to curl up at home with a hot cup of tea… But after a while, those shoulders start to get achy!

5. Stress Increases During Winter — and Stress Affects Pain

The winter months often bring:

  • Holiday obligations

  • Weather disruptions

  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

  • Financial stress

  • Busy schedules

Stress creates muscle tension and amplifies pain signals in the nervous system.
Chiropractic care helps regulate the nervous system and reduce muscle tension, while massage therapy supports relaxation and recovery.

How Chiropractic Care Helps You Stay Comfortable in the Winter

At Division Chiropractic, we take a whole-body approach to winter wellness. Treatments may include:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore mobility and reduce stiffness

  • Massage therapy to warm tissues, boost circulation, and release tension

  • Therapeutic exercises to support posture and flexibility

  • Lifestyle recommendations (like warm-ups, hydration, and at-home stretches) tailored to winter needs

Our goal isn’t just to relieve pain — it’s to help your body function better so winter feels easier on your joints and spine.

Simple Tips You Can Start Today

Try these chiropractor-approved ways to reduce winter discomfort:

  • Do a 5-minute morning warm-up (cat-cows, shoulder rolls, gentle twists)

  • Stay hydrated (yes, even when it’s cold!)

  • Use heat therapy to relax stiff muscles

  • Keep active indoors through stretching, yoga, or resistance bands

  • Layer up to maintain muscle warmth

  • Book regular tune-ups to stay ahead of seasonal flare-ups

Small habits can make a big difference.

When to Seek Chiropractic Care

It might be time for a winter wellness appointment if you notice:

  • Increased stiffness or pain

  • Worsening posture

  • Headaches more frequently

  • Old injuries resurfacing

  • Limited range of motion

  • Pain that disrupts work, sleep, or daily activities

Winter doesn’t have to mean living with pain — your spine deserves support in every season.

Grab a theraband and let’s open up those shoulders. Start with arms straight out in front of you, then slowly pull the band apart, reaching your arms out to the sides. This helps activate the upper back, strengthen postural muscles, and counteract that forward shoulder position from daily life.

Move with control, keep your shoulders relaxed, and feel your chest open as you go. Strong, supported shoulders start with simple, consistent movement.

🗣️ What We’ve Seen in the Office with Jacob: Quadr 🗣️ What We’ve Seen in the Office with Jacob: Quadratus Lumborum (QL) Pain

One thing Jacob has been seeing a lot lately? QL pain.

The quadratus lumborum is a deep low back muscle that helps stabilize your spine and pelvis. When irritated, it can create that deep ache, tightness, or “locked up” feeling on one side of the low back.

Patients often notice it with:
• Standing too long
• Rolling in bed
• Bending or twisting
• Lifting kids, bags, or weights
• Sitting for extended periods

A lot of times this muscle gets overworked because something else isn’t moving or stabilizing well. Stress, posture, workouts, pregnancy/postpartum changes, or compensation patterns can all play a role.

Treatment may include chiropractic care, soft tissue work, mobility, strengthening, and helping the body move more efficiently overall.

If your low back keeps feeling tight or like it “grabs” on one side, the QL might be part of the picture 👏

Wall angels are a go-to for opening the chest and strengthening the muscles that support good posture. With your back against the wall, move your arms slowly up and down while keeping ribs down and wrists/elbows gently connected. It’s a simple way to counteract desk time and get your shoulders moving the way they’re meant to.

Slow, controlled reps = stronger, more supported shoulders.
