Living With Chronic Pain

June 11, 2026 By Megan Thompson

Living with chronic pain can feel exhausting in ways that are hard to explain.

It is not just the pain itself.  It is the planning, the adjusting, the canceling, the pushing through, the wondering whether today will be manageable or whether your body has other plans.  It’s trying to participate in daily life while carrying something that other people may not be able to see.

For many people, chronic pain is an invisible condition.  You may look “fine” on the outside while dealing with pain, stiffness, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, flare-ups, or limited mobility on the inside.  Because of that, it can be easy to feel misunderstood, dismissed, or even questioned.

At Division Chiropractic, we understand that pain does not have to be visible to be real.

Chronic Pain Affects More Than the Body

Chronic pain can impact nearly every part of life.  It may affect how you sleep, how you move, how you work, how you exercise, and how much energy you have for the people and activities you care about.

Over time, chronic pain can also change the way you relate to your body.  You may start avoiding certain movements because you’re afraid they’ll trigger symptoms.  You may feel frustrated when simple tasks take more effort than they used to.  You may feel discouraged if you have tried different approaches and still have not found lasting relief.

These feelings are valid.  Chronic pain is not “just in your head,” and it is not a personal failure.  It is a real experience that deserves thoughtful, supportive care.

How Chiropractic Care May Help With Chronic Pain

Chiropractic care focuses on how the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system work together.  When joints are not moving well or the body is holding tension in certain patterns, it can contribute to pain, stiffness, and irritation.

For patients living with chronic pain, chiropractic care may help by:

  • Improving joint mobility
  • Reducing stiffness and tension
  • Supporting better movement patterns
  • Helping the body feel less guarded or restricted
  • Addressing areas that may be contributing to recurring discomfort

Chiropractic care is not about forcing the body or ignoring your limits.  A good treatment plan should meet you where you are.  That may mean starting gently, modifying techniques, or focusing on comfort and mobility before anything else.

The goal is not simply to “crack your back.”  The goal is to help your body move and function with less stress, so daily life feels more manageable.

How Massage Therapy May Help With Chronic Pain

Massage therapy can be especially helpful for people who experience chronic muscle tension, soreness, stress-related pain, or pain that worsens when the body feels tight and guarded.

When you’re in pain for a long time, your muscles may stay tense as a protective response.  This can create a cycle where pain leads to tension, and tension leads to more pain.  Massage therapy can help interrupt that cycle.

Massage may support chronic pain relief by:

  • Easing muscle tension
  • Improving circulation to tight or overworked areas
  • Supporting relaxation and nervous system regulation
  • Reducing stress held in the body
  • Helping you feel more connected to your body in a safe, supportive way

For chronic pain patients, massage does not always need to be deep or intense to be effective.  Sometimes gentle, consistent work is more helpful than strong pressure.  Your comfort and communication matter throughout the session.

Care That Works With Your Body, Not Against It

One of the most important parts of chronic pain care is feeling heard.

Your pain history, triggers, limitations, and goals matter.  Some patients want to move with less stiffness. Some want to get through work with fewer flare-ups.  Some want to sleep better, walk longer, lift their kids, return to exercise, or simply feel like their body is less of a daily battle.

At Division Chiropractic, we take those goals seriously.

Chiropractic care and massage therapy can be used separately or together, depending on what your body needs.  For some patients, chiropractic adjustments help improve mobility, while massage helps reduce the muscle tension surrounding those restricted areas.  For others, chiropractic may be the starting point before adding massage later.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to chronic pain.

You Deserve Support, Even If Your Pain Is Invisible

If you live with chronic pain, you may be used to minimizing what you feel or explaining yourself over and over again, but you should not have to prove that your pain matters.

You deserve care that is patient, respectful, and centered around YOUR experience.

While chiropractic care and massage therapy may not “cure” every chronic pain condition, they can be valuable tools for managing symptoms, improving mobility, reducing tension, and helping your body feel more supported.

If you are living with chronic pain, we would be honored to be part of your care team.  Whether you’re looking for relief, better movement, or simply a place where your pain will be taken seriously, we are here to help.

Movement Monday 💪 Aging Actively Standing rows wi Movement Monday 💪 Aging Actively

Standing rows with a theraband are a great way to build upper back strength and support better posture. Anchor the band in front of you, stand tall, and pull your elbows back while keeping your shoulders relaxed. This movement helps counteract that forward posture and supports everyday tasks like lifting, carrying, and reaching.

Strong posture starts with a strong back—keep it simple, steady, and consistent.
