Woman holding lower back in discomfort with text overlay: 4 simple tips to relieve lower back pain naturally

4 At-Home Tips for Lower Back Pain Relief (and When to Get Help)

May 2, 2025 By Megan Thompson

Lower back pain is one of the most common issues adults face—whether from sitting too long, lifting improperly, or simply sleeping in the wrong position (one of the joys of adulthood). If you’ve been dealing with ongoing lower back pain, you’re not alone. In fact, thousands in Chicago search for lower back pain relief every month, seeking answers and solutions.
Here’s what you need to know about relieving lower back pain, plus when it’s time to consider professional care.

At-Home Tips for Lower Back Pain Relief

If your lower back pain is mild or if it only occurs every so often, you can try some simple strategies at home to ease discomfort.

1- Cold Therapy
Ice packs reduce inflammation, making them ideal for recent injuries  (I once asked Anthony, a Division Chiropractic massage therapist wizard of deep tissue work, whether he has pain in his hands after work, and he swore by the magic of cold therapy. He said it reduces any inflammation that occurred during the day, so the next day he’s not further exacerbating his hands).  Try using ice therapy on your lower back to relieve inflammation.

2- Heat Therapy
Heat packs or warm showers improve circulation and relax tight muscles, which is great for chronic stiffness.  Another great idea: a warm bath with Epsom salt.

3- Mindfulness in a Posture
When sitting, keep your feet flat, shoulders relaxed, and spine supported.  I previously overheard Dr. Thompson suggesting a patient “feel her tailbone sink into the chair.”  As soon as I heard it, I tried it myself, and it was like a magical sitting

transformation.  You can also consider using lumbar pillow if you sit for long hours. The ones we have at the office are pretty famous… LeBron James uses them!

4- Stretching/Moving
Gentle stretching helps reduce muscle tightness. A couple good options are the Cat-cow stretch or the World’s Greatest Stretch (that’s the actual, real-life name of the stretch– check out the link to see Dr. McTeer demonstrate this stretch).

One bonus tip: standing desk risers.  Alternating between sitting to standing positions helps reduce stress on the body.  You don’t need a new desk to make use of this tip.  Our front desk team uses special risers on their desks, turning a sit-down desks into a standing desk with the push of a button.  Ask them for a demo next time you’re in.

If you’ve tried all this and your back pain persists, read on. There’s hope!

When At-Home Remedies Aren’t Enough

If your back pain is severe or interferes with daily life, it might be time to seek professional help.

You should consider chiropractic care if you’re experiencing:

  • Persistent or chronic lower back pain lasting more than a few weeks.
  • Sharp or radiating pain in the legs, which could indicate nerve compression (like sciatica).
  • Limited mobility or stiffness affecting your range of motion.

How Chiropractic Care Helps with Back Pain

Chiropractors specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, including lower back pain.

At Division Chiropractic, we use gentle, targeted techniques to reduce pain and restore mobility, such as:

  • Spinal Adjustments- Realigning the spine can reduce nerve irritation and relieve tension.
  • Soft Tissue Therapy- Techniques like muscle release and stretching reduce muscle tightness and improve flexibility.
  • Posture and Movement Guidance- We help you build better movement patterns to prevent recurring pain.

We have other modalities in our toolkit that we may use depending on how your pain presents itself.  Sure, we all have human bodies— but no two bodies are exactly alike.

At our clinic, we’re passionate about helping YOU figure out how to lead a pain-free life in the unique body that you have.
