Meet Johnny Fontes: Q+A with a Chicago Massage Therapist

June 5, 2025 By Megan Thompson

Meet Johnny Fontes, a Chicago massage therapist practicing his craft at Division Chiropractic.

He’s not only a knowledgeable massage therapist but he’s also a wonderful, kind human.  Johnny brings incredible skill, compassion, and a true passion for helping people feel their best. He’s also a master at crafting juices.  His juice blends strike the perfect balance—flavorful, fresh, and full of feel-good vibes.

Johnny’s the star of this month’s In the Clinic and Beyond, so keep reading to learn more about what drives him.  And, as always, if you think of any questions we missed, drop us an email at schedule@divisionchiro.com and we’ll make sure to have those answers for you next time.

What’s your role at Division Chiropractic?

I’m a licensed massage therapist. I work with patients in need of relief from pain and stress.

What makes Division Chiropractic the best chiropractor in Chicago?

It’s the best because it’s the most relaxing chiropractor office I’ve been a part of in Chicago.  From the front desk team and   other massage therapists to the patients, it’s a very calming scene. I think the positive energy the chiropractors put out make   it a peaceful place.

What brings you the most joy at work?

I love it when a patient tells me how much relief they received from their massage session.

Reading, relaxing, and smelling life’s roses

What are some of your hobbies or interests?

I like to work out and read.

Do any of your hobbies ever make a positive impact on your life at work? If so, how?

Yes, working out keeps me in shape and allows me to have the strength to endure anything at work.  Reading allows me to go into a relaxed mode when I massage.  I can just drift and allow my mind to think; it really helps me focus on the patient’s needs.

Any good book(s) you’ve read recently?

Trading in the Zone.

Some of Johnny’s must-haves for spring self care

What does self-care look like for you during our spring season?

Self-care looks like getting a massage on a regular basis, juicing to release toxins, and eating high protein, fruits, and     vegetables.

If you had to make up a whole new astrological sign, what would your sign be called and     what would its most distinguishable trait be?

The Plus sign.  I believe that as life goes on I learn and gain from anything and anyone.  Those lessons are always a Plus.

If you could have one brand-new invention added to the office for both our patients and   coworkers to use, what would this invention be?

I’d say hot towel warmers because they’re beneficial in easing the body, and they feel really good.

Forget the rules of nature for a moment– which plant would you most like to see added into our office?

Roses because they are beautiful.

What’s one interesting thing about your role within the clinic that you wish more people knew?

I observe my patients every time they come in so I can track their progress. This is very important for therapists to do and it often goes under the radar.

Thank you, Johnny, for letting us get to know you a little better!

And now, dear audience, it’s your turn!  Any juice recipes you want to share with us?  Would you also like to see rose bushes all throughout our office?  It sounds wonderful, but as they say, every rose has its thorn— Then again, if you have a thorn in your side, you would have to look no further than Johnny because he’s a skilled practitioner that knows how to work out all manner of back and body aches.

Movement Monday 💪 Shoulders That Serve Grab a the Movement Monday 💪 Shoulders That Serve

Grab a theraband and let’s open up those shoulders. Start with arms straight out in front of you, then slowly pull the band apart, reaching your arms out to the sides. This helps activate the upper back, strengthen postural muscles, and counteract that forward shoulder position from daily life.

Move with control, keep your shoulders relaxed, and feel your chest open as you go. Strong, supported shoulders start with simple, consistent movement.

🗣️ What We’ve Seen in the Office with Jacob: Quadr 🗣️ What We’ve Seen in the Office with Jacob: Quadratus Lumborum (QL) Pain

One thing Jacob has been seeing a lot lately? QL pain.

The quadratus lumborum is a deep low back muscle that helps stabilize your spine and pelvis. When irritated, it can create that deep ache, tightness, or “locked up” feeling on one side of the low back.

Patients often notice it with:
• Standing too long
• Rolling in bed
• Bending or twisting
• Lifting kids, bags, or weights
• Sitting for extended periods

A lot of times this muscle gets overworked because something else isn’t moving or stabilizing well. Stress, posture, workouts, pregnancy/postpartum changes, or compensation patterns can all play a role.

Treatment may include chiropractic care, soft tissue work, mobility, strengthening, and helping the body move more efficiently overall.

If your low back keeps feeling tight or like it “grabs” on one side, the QL might be part of the picture 👏

Movement Monday 💪 Shoulders That Serve Wall angel Movement Monday 💪 Shoulders That Serve

Wall angels are a go-to for opening the chest and strengthening the muscles that support good posture. With your back against the wall, move your arms slowly up and down while keeping ribs down and wrists/elbows gently connected. It’s a simple way to counteract desk time and get your shoulders moving the way they’re meant to.

Slow, controlled reps = stronger, more supported shoulders.
